Kick Procrastination: Set a Start Date and Start Now

Procrastination isn’t just a bad habit—it’s a dream killer. Many of us set goals without ever committing to a start date. Without a specific date to begin taking steps, goals remain hypothetical; there is no accountability and nothing changes. I once set a goal to launch a new product “someday,” and years passed without progress. The moment I wrote down a start date everything shifted. A deadline forced me to clear my calendar, rally my team and begin moving, even if conditions weren’t perfect. If you truly want to achieve a goal, pick a start date—today is better than tomorrow.Setting a start date is a commitment to yourself. It signals that your dream is non‑negotiable. When I decided to film the first GPS module, I wrote down “Begin filming June 1.” Suddenly every task—booking a studio, outlining scripts, hiring a videographer—had a timeline. My brain stopped making excuses and started finding solutions. On your calendar, pick a day and write “Day 1” next to your goal. When the day arrives, honour your commitment and take that first step. The GPS program encourages you to pair your start date with microsteps. Knowing both when you begin and what you will do removes ambiguity and reduces procrastination. Whether you’re launching a business, writing a book or improving your health, remember: the best time to start is now.
